In February 2009 I became a big sister to Essence, a shy (but very smiley!) 9 year old girl. Initially she didn't talk to me too much, but she always seemed happy to see me and excited about our time together. We met twice a month consistently for years and it didn't take us long to form a bond. We were both able to do things we may have never done if it weren't for eachother. Six Flags, SkyZone, Guptil's Skate Arena, a Jordin Sparks concert (where Essence got a "high five" from Jordin herself!), countless movies, bowling, manis and pedis, swimming, pottery-making, and Zumba classes are just a few of the countless fun and pretty special things we've done together. We spent afternoons laying on a blanket in Washington Park, playing frisbee and making up word games to get to know eachother better. We took tons of pictures and then made scrapbooks! I picked her up from school or cheerleading practice to go and grab some dinner. Every outing was another chance to connect, build trust, and deepen our friendship.
Some memories stand out most, like the time she held my two week old daugther for the first time and the way Sydney's face still lights up when she sees her. Essence has that kind of face - bright eyes and a smile that will light up a room! A few years ago I attended her 8th grade graduation and watched her accept an award on stage. That shy little 9 year old girl has grown up to be confident, smart, beautiful and SO KIND. I am so happy I was invited to be a part of her life. She'll turn 17 this Fall and, while we don't get to see eachother as often, there is a bond there that can't be broken. We are so proud of us and how we've grown!
My goal is to raise $1,250 in 25 days! That's enough to maintain one match for one year. Please consider making a donation to help another big and little connect like me and Essence. Now, more than ever, it is so important that we care for one another, connect with one another, and love one another. If you've been wondering how you can make a difference, volunteering is a great place to start and BBBS is an amazing cause. Visit www.bbbs.org to learn more. And donate!
